ICUU: ‘Intercultural Communication in Healthcare’ – course in the BA Pharmacy

Through bi-weekly posts, the ICUU team participating in the USO-project ‘Intercultural Competences for Utrecht University’, shares progress updates regarding initiatives to enhance the intercultural competences (IC) of three target groups: students, teachers and support staff.

This week: Students:’Intercultural Communication in Healthcare’ – elective course at the BA Pharmacy

The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences has developed an elective course ‘Intercultural Communication in Healthcare’ in the Bachelor curriculum. This course starts in April 2020 and focuses on developing a base in intercultural communication within healthcare and increases intercultural sensitivity and competences of the students.

This course focuses on different intercultural visions in healthcare. Various studies have shown that patients with a different (cultural) background than the healthcare provider have different visions of healthcare, illness and care. This can easily lead to misunderstandings between, for example a doctor and a patient, and moreover can result in less optimal care for the patient.

Throughout this course students will investigate different theories concerning intercultural communication in different settings of healthcare. Additionally, the students study several perspectives of communication in intercultural situations within the healthcare sector. In small project groups they will analyse their own theme within intercultural communication in healthcare (for example, palliative care, sexual care, etc.) and specialize in this subject. Furthermore, there will be discussions and reflections on different case-studies and situations, students will meet experts from the field and reflect on their own behavior. At the end of the course the students will present their results to the rest of the group. Each student will finish the course with a personal portfolio including their findings and personal reflections.

It is relevant that attention is devoted to such aspects as intercultural communication, since the study programme of Pharmaceutical sciences attracts a wide variety of students from many diverse countries and with different backgrounds. Furthermore, in the professional field of pharmacy and industry, healthcare practitioners will also be in contact with colleagues and patients having diverse backgrounds. To deal appropriately with intercultural encounters, students need to acquire intercultural competences and develop knowledge of, and skills for, intercultural communication. Intercultural Communication is one of the pillars of the strategic plan of the UU, ánd it is included in the learning outcomes in the Pharmacy competency framwork 2016.

In addition to the above, this elective course will be part of the minor Intercultural Communication (which will start in September 2019) in April 2020. In this way, we can provide all students of the UU a wide vision on Intercultural Communication.

ICUU: ‘Interculturele Communicatie in de Gezondheidszorg’ – cursus in de bachelor Farmacie

Het ICUU-team (Interculturele Competenties voor de Universiteit Utrecht) post elke twee weken een update, ten aanzien van één van de deelprojecten met betrekking tot initiatieven voor interculturele competenties voor de drie doelgroepen, studenten, docenten en OBP.

Deze week:  studenten: ‘Interculturele Communicatie in de Gezondheidszorg’ – een keuzecursus bij de BA Farmacie

Het departement Farmaceutische Wetenschappen heeft een keuzecursus ‘Interculturele Communicatie in de Gezondheidszorg’ ontwikkeld voor in het curriculum in het tweede jaar van de bachelor. Deze cursus zal in april 2020 van start gaan.

In het dagelijks leven, in het werkveld en tijdens de studie komen de studenten van Farmacie in aanraking met allerlei (inter)culturele situaties. In het curriculum van Farmacie komt nu géén Interculturele Communicatie voor. In het huidige raamplan Farmacie (2016) staat onder ‘Communicatie’ dat de student in staat moet zijn om een professionele (farmaco)therapeutische relatie aan te gaan op basis van empathie, wederzijds begrip en vertrouwen (…) en te zorgen voor een open en respectvolle communicatie, en empathie en betrokkenheid te tonen (Raamplan Farmacie, 2016). Dit houdt dus in óók met patiënten (en collega’s) met eventueel een andere achtergrond dan zijzelf. Voor afgestudeerde studenten van Farmacie zijn interculturele competenties dus van wezenlijk belang.

De opleiding Farmacie heeft daarom deze keuzecursus ontwikkeld om interculturele communicatie te implementeren in het curriculum.

De cursus ‘Interculturele Communicatie in de Gezondheidszorg’ richt zich in eerste instantie op het ontwikkelen van een basis in interculturele communicatie in de gezondheidszorg, waarbij interculturele sensitiviteit bij en competenties van de studenten, én het bewustzijn hiervan worden verhoogd.

Tijdens deze cursus richten we ons op de verschillende interculturele visies in de gezondheidszorg. Uit meerdere onderzoeken is gebleken dat patiënten met verschillende achtergronden dan de zorgverlener een ander beeld van de gezondheidszorg, ziektes en zorgverlening kunnen hebben. Daarom kunnen zorgverleners en patiënten met een andere achtergrond elkaar minder of niet goed begrijpen en kan er onbegrip ontstaan. Dit resulteert in minder optimale zorg voor de patiënt.

Tijdens de eerste colleges wordt een basis gelegd met algemene theorie en modellen, en wordt er een algemeen beeld gegeven van interculturele communicatie binnen de gezondheidszorg. Ook komt aan bod hoe verschillende patiëntengroepen met andere culturele achtergronden verschillende percepties kunnen hebben van de gezondheidszorg.

In de colleges die daarop volgen wordt er aandacht besteed aan casuïstiek en komen experts uit het werkveld langs om te vertellen over hun ervaringen. De studenten werken aan een eigen gekozen specifiek onderwerp, gericht op interculturele communicatie in de gezondheidszorg, samen met hun eigen projectgroep. Elke projectgroep zal verschillende situaties en casuïstiek onderzoeken, reflecteren op die situaties en daarover discussiëren met elkaar en met de gehele groep. Ook reflecteren de studenten uitgebreid individueel op hun eigen gedrag in verschillende interculturele situaties.

Aan het einde van de cursus presenteren de studenten hun eigen resultaten aan de groep. Elke student sluit de cursus individueel af met een portfolio met eigen bevindingen en reflecties.

Tot slot zal dit keuzevak onderdeel uitmaken van een minor Interculturele Communicatie, die in het studiejaar 2019-2020 van start gaat.
