David Onnekink and Danny Broere winners Teacher Awards 2022

David Onnekink, lecturer in History (Faculty of Humanities), has won the prize Teacher of the Year 2022. Danny Broere, lecturer in Chemistry (Faculty of Science), was named Teacher Talent of the Year 2022.

The jury chose these lecturers because of their commitment to education, even in times of COVID-19. These two lecturers have a lot of passion for their subject, take the students with them in their teaching and know how to make a connection between academia, practice and education.

Teacher of the Year: David Onnekink

David focuses on the stories of students in his teaching and on three goals: to be recognizes, to be heard, and to be inspired. Students’ stories get together with the stories of history and current events. To his students, he therefore asks the question: what’s your story? Students feel heard by him, see the passion he has for his field of work and perceive him as an approachable lecturer.

The jury see David as a lecturer you will still remember for the rest of your life and was impressed with the amount of work he takes on, as a lecturer and tutor, and how social issues get a place in his teaching.

Teacher Talent of the Year: Danny Broere

According to his students, Danny teaches with great enthusiasm. His passion lies with studying chemistry and pushing boundaries and he transfers that well to his students. He succeeds in fascinating his students about his rather difficult field of work and in clarifying the abstract theory that comes with it in practice.

It was clear for the jury that Danny is a lecturer who wants to involve his students as much as possible in his teaching and he motivates them to step out of their comfort zone. His structure and time management, which he retained in times of COVID-19, are much appreciated by his students.
