ICUU: Intercultural Competences for teachers

Through bi-weekly posts, the ICUU team participating in the USO-project on ‘Intercultural Competences for Utrecht University’ will share updates on progress regarding the initiatives to enhance the intercultural competences (IC) of three target groups: students, teachers and support staff.

(Read the Dutch version below.)

This week: teachers: Intercultural competences for teachers

This part of the USO project is aimed at teachers at the UU. In this project the aspect of intercultural competences in the current UTQ courses (in Dutch: BKO) will be reinforced and a new course in intercultural competences will be developed in addition to already existing courses for the international classroom.

University Teaching Qualification (UTQ)

As part of the USO-project on ‘Intercultural Competences for Utrecht University’ we will examine how intercultural competences can become part of the content of the programme of the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ, in Dutch: BKO). In order to do so we will send a questionnaire to teachers who have recently followed the UTQ programme to identify if and how the experience of teaching abroad has helped teachers in their development of intercultural competences. The results of the questionnaire will be used as a (potential) recommendation for a teaching experience abroad. Furthermore, it will be examined how the aspect of intercultural competence can be addressed within the course programme of the UTQ.

New course ‘Intercultural Competences for teachers’

A new course for university teachers will also be developed. This course will be open to all teachers of the UU and can be followed in addition to the course Teaching in the International Classroom which has a more didactical approach, but the course can also be followed in itself. The focus of the course ‘Intercultural competences for teachers’ will be on the teacher’s personal development in intercultural competence but always from the point of view of their own educational practice. We will do this by reflecting on video material, case studies and on the ‘rich points’ from their own educational practice. In collaboration with the faculty of Science it will be assessed whether the course ‘Intercultural competences for teachers’ is also applicable for the multicultural classroom (rather than just the international classroom) and any changes to the programme will be made if necessary.

Didactic guidelines

The experience from the projects above will result in didactic guidelines for teachers in a intercultural setting (whether international or multicultural) and will be presented in a workshop for teachers at the UU. The didactic guidelines will also become available on the TAUU website.

Nederlands:
